Biggest move of my life {n00b} |

I am moving to Vancouver in June, I am so scared
&nervous. I have lived in Newfoundland most of my life, although I was not born here. So going from a small quiet town to a bigger one, that is nerve
wracking. I am moving to hopefully advance in my artistic carrer and with fingers **crossed** I can become a tattoo apprentice. That is a dream of mine! I
stumbled across this forum and looked awesome. I want to know more about Vancouver. What is it like living there and finding work.

Spook thinks Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are the same place.
Welcome from another east coaster! I moved here from Nova Scotia (though I am not a tattoist) a few years back and haven't regretted it once. Compared to back east, jobs are easier to get and they pay more, but the cost of living is higher. Though if you don't mind the commute you can live cheaper by living further from downtown. Other than that, what else did you want to know about Vancouver?

Haha newfie tattooists!! I ain't a newfie LOL!! I lived here, but not born in NL
Pink is awesome to the maxxx!! Wow awesome, I like that it is easier to find work, as I am sure you know the pain in looking for work out in the east cost! I dont know a whole lot about Vancouver and looking to learn more about the city...how it is like living there. What is crime like there? Is it noisy? Is there much pollution? I am not sure what to ask but anything that u know would help getting used to the adjustment from here to BC!

I moved from Vancouver to Halifax ( don't even ASK me why) and I'd say that the horror stories I'm sure every east coaster "hears" about
Vancouver isn't true. There's zero news other than "big bad city" that filters east.
Crime: I've never been a victim of it in either city, but Halifax set the record for me having to call the police ( when someone started harassing me by phone). It's Noisier. but then halifax itself seems to shut down and go to bed promptly at 8, so that might be something you need to get used to. It's not all bad. It's the sound of civilization. Polllution: well, uh, the beaches are mostly swimmable. You couldn't pay me enough to jump in the halifax harbor. The wages are higher in BC,. rent may be higher, but food's cheaper, transit's awesome. ( we pay a fortune for food here now.Ack.) We're moving back to vancouver this summer, if that tells you anything. |

And WHY did u move to Halifax??
LMAO, J/K!! Awesome!! Sounds like east coast is crazy, LOL!! I never swam in the ocean because it is too cold here in NL and not safe to!! I noticed I call the police here a lot!! Good to know it is not that bad... I will get used to the noise...have to huh? I am easily adapted to change! I cannot wait to move!! I am going to enjoy my plane ride, I will pay extra to get the window seat!! I will enjoy my first plane ride since being a kid... I cannot remember do that when I was so young...

It seemed like a good idea at the time. (it wasn't.)
People ask me all the time here if Vancouver was this wild west town of depravity and violence and everyone will kick you and they're not friendly like us maritimers, right? The truth is very little information filters from west to east, so they don't actually know we really don't resort to cannabalism and pulling ears off bunnies in the big mean city. The noise isn't bad, we lived on a main road down the street from a firehall in Van, and now in Halifax, near hospitals with three helipads and it's noisier here. ( in summer, it sounds like 'nam with the copters coming and going!) People are typically friendly, if a bit reserved, we're busy, we have lives! Things to do. Places to go. I moved from small town alberta to vancouver. It was a bit of a shock, but it wasn't all bad. Just watch out for weirdos at skytrain stations! ( I swear, I had more creeeptastic encounters on skytrain than anywhere.) |

How much money? I would say as much as you can.
Depends on how much you need to live month to month with bills etc/food/entertainment expenses, and budget for 2-3 months. that way you're more than covered.

Ok, thank you.
I guess I am lucky to have a place to stay so rent is not a issue right away!
